The South Korean auto manufacturer, Hyundai launched its first fully electric SUV- Kona Electric, in India on 9 th July 2019, with a promise to make India guide into a new era with clean and connected mobility.
Kona Electric is very versatile and powerful and is the first All-Electric SUV in India. Its power-packed performance provides an exciting driving experience with high acceleration over long distances. KONA Electric changes the way people think about going electric, thus reducing environmental pollution. And thus, will set a high benchmark for any future EVs coming to India – especially in the SUV space.
Hyundai Kona Electric launched in India pricing ₹ 25.30 lakh (ex-showroom, pan India) and promises a driving range of 452 km/charge. This is the first-ever electric SUV launched in India. The Kona electric car is a solid crossover, alike Hyundai Creta in terms of size and space, but has a design which is not over revolutionary, yet sharp enough to make itself unique on the road. The bold exterior design hooks the eye with muscular carved shapes, sleek LED daytime running lamps and low-mounted headlamps along with single-piece body-coloured bumper rising up till the bonnet, Hyundai’s signature cascading grille design is embedded on to the bumper, giving it a modern, contemporary design. The ‘grille’ has a flap which reveals the charging port. Hyundai has positioned the charging port into the front of the SUV, so as to eliminate the need to reverse the Kona electric into tight spaces to charge it. Kona electric is provided with two battery ratings internationally, 64kWh battery pack and 39.2kWh battery pack, though Hyundai is only launching the 39kWh version in India.
Other distinctive features are the alloy wheel design and the black plastic cladding on the sides, assisted by the 2,600mm wheelbase which has allowed Hyundai to bundle the battery packs into the floorboard neatly. Generally, the Kona electric looks sporty and premium, with top built quality.
While moving on to the interior, you enter into the heart of unmatched comfort like button type shift by wire technology, impeccably designed Bridge-type centre console, and Smart Eco pedal guide. The cabin is largely identical to the regular version of the Kona SUV. The SUV comes with leather seats as standard along with leather-wrapped steering wheel, soft-touch material for the dashboard, sporty metal pedals and a fully digital instrument cluster. The well-laid-out dashboard gets displays that tell you driving range, and power status of the battery, in addition to a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation and voice recognition. The cabin features provided are the smart electric sunroof, heated and ventilated seats, 10-way adjustable power driver seat, and electric parking brake among others. As in case of the safety features, KONA Electric comes with ultra-high tensile strength steel, 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, hill assist, rear camera with guidelines, tyre pressure monitor, and more.
KONA Electric is tailored with a lithium-ion polymer battery that offers outstanding performance. Hyundai provides two chargers to the buyer along with the car, a portable charger and an AC Wall Box Charger. The battery can be fully charged in seven to eight hours and using a fast-charger can charge the battery up to 80 per cent in under an hour. The India-spec car can sprint from 0-100 kmph in 9.7 seconds, which makes it quite quick for an SUV.
Hyundai Motor India is working on charging infrastructure set up a and has partnered with Indian Oil Corporation to install a fast-charging facility in selected cities like Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru and Delhi. The Hyundai will also have a dedicated EV Care manager at the showrooms and also offer 24*7 vehicle to vehicle charging support for the ease of customers.
